The artistic arrangement »Litera Patentes Scotiae cum Magnum Sigillum, 1840« depicts a Scottish Patent, written in Latin on parchment paper and issued to one Richard Beard for improvements in printing calicoes. It also displays the Great Seal, affixed to the patent with a braided twine. Scottish patents were only issued until 1852, when the Patent Law Amendment Act extended the scope of Letters Patents to the whole of the United Kingdom.
